So you’re thinking of beginning a yoga practice, but aren’t sure where to start? Here are some essentials you need to know.
Yoga: the word means union, that is, the union of body, mind and spirit.
There are several different types of yoga. Here are three of them:
- Hatha Yoga – 5,000 years old, thousands of postures
- Kundalini – 1,600 years old, postures arranged into sets to harness the energy in your body and mind
- Bikram Yoga – hot yoga, a modern invention, 26 poses only, done in a hot, humid studio 80 degrees or more. Bikram is very strenuous, so be careful of dehydration and heart issues.
We hear people every day say, “I’m going to start doing yoga.” However, most of those people don’t realize that yoga is a way of life; it isn’t something that you just do. You have to commit to a certain lifestyle in order to really practice yoga.
Yoga is something that affects every single facet of your life. It can change your mind, body and soul. It isn’t just some exercise program that you start doing because you want to lose weight; although it can help with weight loss.
You do it because you love it and you want to be more in touch with yourself, your feelings and your spiritual self.
Yoga is a form of personal growth and if you can’t commit to that growth and don’t really, really want it then it more than likely isn’t for you. Continue reading
