And, what does it mean to be happy, anyway? I don’t think we’re meant to be happy all of the time. It is, however, good to have those times where events, our mood, or by just living in the moment itself, results in the feeling of immense contentment – like the proverbial “Everything is right with the world.”

Unfortunately, many people nowadays are unable to muster a glimmer of happiness – or even hope that things will ever be all right in their world. I know. I’ve been there. Many times.

I have come to realize, that for me, those times when I feel down right depressed are usually when I have not been taking very good care of myself on a nutritional level. I’ve either been eating a lot of crappy food, or not eating much at all, and not taking my nutritional supplements that I need to be able to function optimally.

When I stock up on all of the good quality vitamins, minerals, herbs, antioxidants, trace minerals, etc., AND, when I take them all on a regular basis like I need to do for them to be effective, I feel better – stronger on all levels – physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.  I am more present with myself and in the world. I feel much more connected to God and Nature, and I spend more time in prayers of gratitude. And, THAT makes me happy.

But, for most of the time, I just feel content. And, yes, there are those times when I am not happy – or content. I still get frustrated, annoyed, angry, sad – but less frequently now than when I don’t take care of myself nutritionally.

So, for me, I’ve had to choose to get healthy by feeding my body the things it needs that, in turn, sets the stage for any possibility of anything resembling happiness or contentment to occur. When I worked in community mental health, I knew that if we relied on good nutrition rather than pharmaceuticals, there would rarely be a need for community mental health centers to begin with.

I encourage everyone to choose to take care of themselves on a nutritional and physical level, and then the choices that will make our lives better will be much easier to make.
