At one time or another, we all feel overwhelmed. If you’re like the vast majority, you’ve probably got any number of irons in the fire at one time and often feel like you’re running in circles, chasing your tail. The pressures of daily life are bound to catch up with us; it’s not a matter of if, but when.
How do we continue on with the daily grind and push these feelings of overwhelm and stress to the side? We bury ourselves in the sand and wonder why we can’t move our arms. Read that again.
We bury ourselves in the sand and wonder why we can’t move our arms.
We can point the blame in every other direction a million times over, accusing people of taking advantage of our kindness and willingness to help. We can be resentful of the ones who require our attention and don’t even notice how exhausted we’ve become.
In the end, the real blame is on us. We do it to ourselves. How? It’s very simple. We allow it to happen. The sooner you learn to take control of your time and set boundaries, the less stress and overwhelm you’ll encounter.
We are all different and where one tip might not work well in your situation, another might fit like a glove. Build off of the ones that do fit. Experiment with different ideas until you’ve found the balance necessary in your life. You’ll thank yourself a million times over.
Keep Going – Put One Foot in Front of the Other
When life pressures get the better of us and throws too many curve balls at once, many of us freeze. Instead of reacting we retreat, hide in the corner and procrastinate. We know things need to be done.
We know people are counting on us. Yet we feel paralyzed and deal with the anxieties of nothingness instead of pushing forward. It’s during these times we mustn’t give in or give up.
The phrase “Eat the elephant one bite at a time” applies here. Life is your elephant. You can’t possibly devour it whole, but you can take one bite at a time.
Progress is single-handedly the best motivator. When you see the dent you’ve made, you are more likely to continue gnawing away, bite after bite.
There is no sense in freaking out about things that may or may not happen in the future. Likewise, repeatedly punching yourself in the gut over past decisions or experiences isn’t helpful either. Bring your focus back to the here and now and breathe.
Life is funny. One minute it could be like the calmest, blue waters surrounding us with peace and happiness. The next, an entire brigade of soldiers are rushing in from all directions, guns raised and tensions high.
We can’t predict what’s going to happen, but we can take care of ourselves, insist on balance and prioritization, round up our own army of helpers, and be persistent with our progress.
